Community Mental Health Center (Baton Rouge Mental Health Clinic--CAHSD)

Health and Hospitals, Office of Behavioral Health

The Baton Rouge Mental Health Clinic serves adults from the East Baton Rouge Parish.

Hotline numbers: 1-800-8367 or 225-924-3900

During normal working hours, a person in crisis may call or walk-in to any of the three full-time mental health centers in the District, and will receive evaluation with appropriate disposition that same day.

During evenings and weekends, The Capital Area Human Services District provides clinical on-call staff to help individuals access appropriate emergency or crisis care when the community mental health center is not open. On-call staff may be accessed by calling the hotline numbers listed above, or through area emergency rooms. Where hospitalization is indicated as appropriate, the on-call staff will arrange for hospitalization in a state facility. In those instances where hospitalization does not seem necessary, the on-call person will make interim recommendations and then arrange for the individual to be seen at the mental health center the next business day.

If you are a relative or concerned friend, and you believe a person to be harmful to themselves or others and/or unable to function due to possible psychosis or a severe psychiatric problem AND the person is unwilling to come in voluntarily for an evaluation, then you may contact the coroner’s office in your parish and request that they issue an Order of Protective Custody (OPC) for the individual. After the OPC is issued, then the coroner’s officer or a police/sheriff officer may pick the individual up and transport them to the nearest mental health clinic or the after hours location for an evaluation by the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist will then assess what the person’s condition requires, i.e., hospitalization, medication, outpatient therapy or perhaps no treatment at all, in which case the individual may be released.

**Please note: In the event of a physical/medical emergency, dial 911 or go immediately to the nearest emergency room for medical treatment.
