| Purpose/Function | The board is responsible for safeguarding the life and health of Louisiana residents through the regulation of persons practicing or offering to practice as a registered nurse. The board establishes minimum curriculum requirements and approves nursing schools. |
| Budget Message | Budget Message 2011-2012 The Louisiana State Board of Nursing continues to see an increase in the volume and complexity of its work. Driving elements are the authority to conduct criminal background checks on all applicants for licensure, including students enrolled in clinical nursing courses. The LSBN also now receives rapbatch reports on any new criminal incident by individual’s previously fingerprinted in relation to an LSBN application resulting in an increased number of investigations. The LSBN was urged by the Louisiana State Senate to establish a nursing workforce center. The newly established Center has launched a major nursing workforce survey to obtain the necessary data to project nursing workforce needs and project planning needs. Further, health care reform and the retirement of baby boomers have created a growing need for advanced practice registered nurses services.
